Two Strikes

[World #1 ranked golfer Yani] Tseng may be on the vanguard of a new world order, but as long as Madison Avenue is in New York, she will polish her English, wiggle into form-fitting outfits and do her best to woo American advertisers.

“We know Yani has a couple of strikes against her in America,” Tseng’s adviser, Ernie Huang, said. “One, she is a woman, and second, she is Asian.”

The Kimchi Situation Ain't Good

This is what happens when the price of a head of Korean-grown napa cabbage jumps all the way to $14.

Kimchi has become so expensive that some restaurants in the capital no longer offer it free as a banchan, or side dish, a situation akin to having an American burger joint charge for ketchup, although decidedly more calamitous here. The politics editor of a major South Korean newspaper called the kimchi situation “a national tragedy,” and an editorial in Dong-a Ilbo termed it “a once in a century crisis.”

No kimchi banchan? UNACCEPTABLE.

Blind Adherence to Rules Is the Death of Common Sense

Like the guy who thought it was a good idea to suspend a 3rd grader for a week for the heinous crime of possessing a piece of candy:

Jack Ellis, the superintendent for Brazos Independent School District, declined an on-camera interview. But he said the school was abiding by a state guideline that banned “minimal nutrition” foods.

“Whether or not I agree with the guidelines, we have to follow the rules,” he said.

And the track coach who thought it was a good idea to win by getting the first place finisher DQ'd for wearing a string bracelet:

Laird walked back to the top of the runway, gained her composure, then took off again. This time everything was in sync. She planted the pole, lifted herself into the air and soared easily over the bar to give her team a 66-61 victory. While half the crowd cheered and the other half groaned, Monrovia coach Mike Knowles reacted by pointing to his wrist and gesturing toward Laird, who was wearing a thin, colorful string bracelet.

“This is my 30th year coaching track,” Knowles said a few days later. “I know a lot of rules and regulations.”

Good for you, Coach. Maybe you should teach your girls to jump higher.

He's Not Brain Damaged, He's Just an Asshole

Are you fucking serious, Sports Illustrated?

Grafman is a neuropsychologist at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, and for decades he has studied the effects of brain trauma on Vietnam veterans as well as civilians. "My specialty is frontal lobes," he says, referring to the part of the brain involved in regulating a person's judgment, inhibition and social behavior. "A person with damage might not read the intentions of a woman at a bar very well, for example," Grafman says. "They might succumb to more primitive urges instead of saying, 'I shouldn't do this because it affects my career.'"

Why Do We Even Bother?

Shahzad was placed on a "no-fly" list Monday after he was identified as the buyer, Pistole said. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano declined to say how Shahzad was able to board the flight if he was on the "no-fly" list.

Me Talk Pretty One Day

Stay classy, Arizona:

Teachers should speak good grammar because kids pick up what they hear," said Johanna Haver, a proponent of English-language immersion who serves as an adviser to Arizona educators. "Where you draw the line is debatable.
