Blind Adherence to Rules Is the Death of Common Sense

Like the guy who thought it was a good idea to suspend a 3rd grader for a week for the heinous crime of possessing a piece of candy:

Jack Ellis, the superintendent for Brazos Independent School District, declined an on-camera interview. But he said the school was abiding by a state guideline that banned “minimal nutrition” foods.

“Whether or not I agree with the guidelines, we have to follow the rules,” he said.

And the track coach who thought it was a good idea to win by getting the first place finisher DQ'd for wearing a string bracelet:

Laird walked back to the top of the runway, gained her composure, then took off again. This time everything was in sync. She planted the pole, lifted herself into the air and soared easily over the bar to give her team a 66-61 victory. While half the crowd cheered and the other half groaned, Monrovia coach Mike Knowles reacted by pointing to his wrist and gesturing toward Laird, who was wearing a thin, colorful string bracelet.

“This is my 30th year coaching track,” Knowles said a few days later. “I know a lot of rules and regulations.”

Good for you, Coach. Maybe you should teach your girls to jump higher.
